JOB INTERVIEW
Momoka Karube
breadworks Omotesando Store Manager
Why I Joined as a New Graduate:
Finding a Place to Pursue My Passions Amidst Uncertainty
I joined TYSONS & COMPANY (hereafter "TYSONS") as a new graduate, but I actually had plans to join a different company originally —a major restaurant chain where I had worked during my university years. However, the pandemic changed everything, and that plan was wiped clean. Since I hadn't considered any other path, I felt lost about my future after graduation. On the other hand, I had a dream of eventually owning my own shop, so I considered working as a freelancer at a small, independently-owned business. However, my mother advised me that itʼs important to first learn how a corporate organization works. Taking her advice to heart, I finally decided to step into society as a new graduate in the spring of my senior year.
Iʼve always loved visiting cafes, and having worked in a bakery as a student, bread has always been a big part of my life. I was already familiar with "No.4" and "crisscross," and I was a frequent guest at "breadworks Omotesando" because I absolutely loved their wheat bread. At the time, though, I had no idea they were all operated by the same company!
While searching for a place to work, those shops came to mind, and thatʼs when I first discovered TYSON. Their policy of "Making people happy through food," which I found on their website, was the exact same principle I had valued since my part-time working days. Feeling a strange sense of fate, I was convinced that "this is the place where I can pursue what I want to do!" and applied immediately. Looking back, especially on my first year, it was an incredibly intense and rewarding time where I was able to absorb so much.
A Circle That Connects Beyond Individual Shops:
A Place Where Everyone Becomes Your "Emotional Support"
One of the best things about TYSONS is the strength of our "horizontal connections." My first assignment after joining was at breadworks Tennoz. Since the main office is also located there, I had many opportunities to interact with the headquarters staff as well as the team at T.Y.HARBOR. Since moving to Omotesando, my connections with the staff at crisscross and CICADA have grown even more.
Even if we work at different locations, everyone is ready to lend a hand when someone is in trouble, which provides incredible emotional support. Because TYSONS has such a variety of shop concepts, itʼs fun to visit other locations as a guest, and I love the hospitality I receive there.
As the Shopʼs Number One Fan:
Passing on My "Passion" to Staff and Guests
Now that I am a Manager, I am highly conscious of how to maximize the performance of my staff. Having been on the "performer" side for a long time, I sometimes find the transition to a leadership role challenging, but I feel immense joy when I see the team united toward a single goal and enjoying their conversations with guests. I personally love talking to guests more than anything, so even in this position, I make it a point to prioritize those interactions.
The biggest charm of breadworks Omotesando is that the shop floor faces the oven, allowing
us to serve fresh-baked bread immediately. I love this shop because the distance to the guests
is so close and I can hear their feedback directly. Since my shop focuses primarily on takeout,
I rarely get to see the moment a customer actually eats the bread. Thatʼs why Iʼm always
thinking about how to ensure they "take that happiness home" with them. I believe the charm
of the bread, combined with the thoughtfulness of the staff during the purchase, stays with
the customer until the moment they take a bite.
Ultimately, I strive to be the "number one fan" of my own shop. I believe this passion is
contagious and will always reach both the staff and our guests, so I make sure never to forget
it.
